Taking Pictures to the Moon

The sky has too many limits.

Sky high

I am a sucker for a scenic sky.

When I drive home from school, I drive west. If I’m coming home from a night class, I have the opportunity to watch some of the most glorious sunsets as I’m coasting down the freeway. There is a point where I-696 goes over I-75 and for a brief few seconds, the elevation gives the perfect view of the sky ahead. Often the clouds are reflecting the most vibrant yellows, oranges and reds from the sun with various deep shades of blue set against them.

I photographed this in fall, 2009 in Royal Oak. I was on my way home from a class and had to pull over just to capture this image. The bottom one is a more faithful representation of what the sky actually looked like but I enjoy the deep red-orange overcast of the top image. Silhouetted pine trees at Main Street are in the foreground but the outline of the Detroit Zoo water tower is most prominent. The flock of geese in the distance was just an added bonus to the photograph.

Which version do you like better? I have a print of the red version on sale at my Etsy shop. Go ahead, check it out and favorite it if you like it!

  1. To be honest, I actually like the bottom one better. The more “faithful” one. I guess I just like the blue mixing with the yellow. It’s more of a unique-looking sky to me.

  2. I definitely see where you’re coming from. I like both versions for different reasons. But if I hadn’t posted the “faithful” one, would the other one still have caught your eye?

  3. Yeah! It’s a great shot. I love the water tower. (I love the zooooo!) And the geese were definitely a happy accident.

  4. I also like the bottom one better. The first one has that red that pops and gets your attention from the get-go. But to me it doesn’t seem real; it’s more like something you’d see in a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic movie. The bottom one, on the other hand, may not grab your attention at first, but it’s more dynamic in terms of color; there’s more there to look at. It feels warmer and more welcoming. I see the birds in that one easier than in the first.

  5. Gwah I really like them both, the bottom one does look more realistic, but the top one has a slight fantasy feel, how I would want to imagine it, to it and I really like that about it. 🙂
